Stamford Dog Park Open!

According to a friend: We walked up, construction appears to have finished, except for the water fountains. I walked around the perimeter to be sure the fences are safe. They are, so off we went. I don't know if it's officially open, but there wasn't any sign that says, "open June 1" or anything. Also, there were other dogs there. Keep reading to see pictures!

Sounds like Stamford. Everything is a "soft" opening.
At least someone liked it tho...

I think they need to do some planting and other work. I stopped to check it out on a run the other day. They should do something to shield the highway barrier, not the most attractive site.

I'm a fan of the New Canaan park, where my second-hand designer cross-breed likes to incite a riot, yo, Stamford style.

However, I am a wary dog park user, after the 'doodle was bitten badly by a pit bull at Waveny last year. $1,000.00 later, I always check the doggie vibe, and if I don't like it I leave right away.

I'll be interested to see what the patrons (human and canine) are like at the Courtland Ave. park.

@JT

A lot of people worked really hard to get this park approved and then built with very little support from the city. As a result, the park was built by donations which barely covered the fencing and water supply.

Your ideas are good, but if you're going to start by pointing out the shortcomings and tell us what we should do, perhaps you should pony up.

Hmmm. Patty, you're not helping my dog fears... but that's smart- check out the vibe, leave if you no likey.

As far as appearances, maybe they'll do plantings later. As the dog park gets more popular and well-known, which I think it will be, I think people will more willing to donate.

They did a few happy hours for fundraisers. I think they should keep doing that, and as more people use the park, they'll get a bigger crowd for happy hours.

You can tell I'm totally into happy hours now that my access to them is limited (somewhat) by a baby. Once he gets his first rounds of shots, and this swine flu scare abates, he and I will be out a little more. We mostly do Target and Cove Beach these days!

As a dog park frequenter in NYC, I can say that alot of fancy plantings are not likely to last. Maybe a line of arborvitaes along wherever the highway is.
Dog parks need upkeep and simpler is better.
After fund raising gets going, benches are probably what to spend on.
I don't even know where this is...I'll have to go and find it with Lola.
I hadnt heard that they were raising $ for this or I would have contributed. Ninebear, if you're involved, its probably better to post the address where to send donations rather than complain at someone who was really just making suggestions. In a dog park you want people who have ideas on how to fix it up; those are the people who can form committees to bring in bushes and whatever...By all means post the mail or paypal address. Im pretty poor right now, but this is the kind of thing that I'd like to contribute to.

This is great!

I have taken my dog to dog parks for years and never witnessed any serious incidents.

Owners of aggressive or poorly socialized dogs know they aren't welcome there and generally stay away.

Those who bring them anyway and their dogs starts to misbehave are quickly ousted by the other owners and rarely come back.
